My 12 year old was born with a condition called Optic Nerve Hypoplasia. Basically the optical nerves didn't grow properly in utero. They are stunted and one eye is short sighted and the other is long sighted both also being deficient in sight. Add to that he has nystagmus so his eyes are always moving around and combined this leaves him with less than 10% of a normal adults vision.
Does anyone else have a child with a similar condition? and if so what do you do to help your child to reach their full potential.
Although he is classed as legally blind, thankGOD he is able to see enough to function in mainstream schooling without the need for a cane or dog to guide him, just he has these shockingly expensive glasses that he has to wear and the teachers use special coloured chalk on the boards and enlarge his texts in his books to make it easy for him. I'm wondering if I should have him learn braille because no one knows for certain if his eyes will get worse or not. All they say is that it won't get better. Not a great prognosis at all and nothing to get us excited and hopeful about.

Hi Lisa,
I don't personally have any experience or know anyone who is legally blind. But I "met" this lovely lady via her blog recently, she raised a blind child, maybe she could offer something?
